SwellPolymer LCM

SKU: RXSOL-81-4160-025

RXSOL SwellPolymer LCM is a cross-linked, water-swellable polyacrylamide-based polymer designed for use as a Loss Circulation Material (LCM) in horizontal drilling, HDD and drilling-fluid applications.

The dry polymer rapidly absorbs water and expands to many times its original volume, producing a soft, cohesive and highly swollen polymer mass. When placed into permeable zones, fractures, voids or unconsolidated formations, the swollen material helps bridge, seal and reduce fluid losses.

Unlike conventional water-soluble polyacrylamides, RXSOL SwellPolymer LCM is cross-linked and insoluble in water. It retains its polymeric structure while absorbing and holding large quantities of water.

Precautions & Remarks

How does LCM Lost Circulation Material work in drilling?

When the dry polymer comes into contact with water, the cross-linked polymer network rapidly absorbs water.

The polymer particles expand and form a swollen, cohesive mass.

Dry polymer → Water absorption → Rapid swelling → Particle expansion → Fracture/void filling → Loss reduction

The cross-linked structure prevents the polymer from simply dissolving into the drilling fluid. Instead, the material maintains its three-dimensional polymer network while retaining absorbed water.

Procedure

How to use and control Lost Control Material

RXSOL SwellPolymer LCM may be introduced directly into the drilling fluid or used as a pre-hydrated treatment.

Method A - Dry Addition
  • Determine the severity and approximate size of the loss zone.
  • Select an appropriate particle-size grade.
  • Add the required quantity slowly into the circulating drilling fluid.
  • Maintain sufficient agitation to achieve uniform dispersion.
  • Circulate toward the loss zone.
  • Allow sufficient residence/contact time for hydration and swelling.
  • Monitor returns and fluid-loss reduction.
  • Repeat treatment if required.

Method B - Pre-Hydration

Pre-hydration can be used where rapid swelling and plugging are required.
  1. Fill a clean mixing tank with compatible water.
  2. Start moderate agitation.
  3. Slowly add RXSOL SwellPolymer LCM.
  4. Allow the polymer to hydrate and swell.
  5. Continue mixing until a uniform swollen polymer slurry/gel is obtained.
  6. Pump or place the swollen material into the designated loss zone.
  7. Allow sufficient static contact time for formation of the sealing plug.

Do not add large quantities of dry polymer at once, as rapid hydration can cause lump formation and uneven dispersion.

Note

Key Features of using RXSOL LCM Swelling Polymer

  • Rapid water absorption and swelling
  • Can be pre-hydrated before application
  • Swells several hundred times its dry volume under suitable conditions
  • Helps seal fractures, voids and permeable formations
  • Effective in unconsolidated and caving formations
  • Useful for horizontal drilling and HDD operations
  • Non-fermenting polymeric material
  • Easy to handle, mix and apply
  • Economical compared with many conventional LCM systems
  • Remains as a cohesive swollen mass after hydration
  • Particle size can be selected according to loss-zone characteristics

Keywords

How to control lost circulation?

Depending on the particle size and concentration used, RXSOL SwellPolymer LCM can work through several mechanisms:

Particle Bridging

Polymer particles enter openings and bridge across fractures and permeable pathways.

Swelling

Following water contact, particles expand and occupy additional pore/fracture volume.

Plug Formation

Swollen particles consolidate into a flexible plug that restricts further drilling-fluid movement.

Formation Stabilization

The swollen polymer can help bind loose or unconsolidated material and reduce fluid invasion.
